Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), our school system, doesn’t want your kids to get any big ideas from glimpsing that disturbing image, because MCPS prohibits growing fruits and vegetables in school gardens...

    The concern is attraction of vermin?

    What a fine lesson to teach kids how to prevent their appearance with fencing and if ravaged by insects, what better way to discuss the advantages and drawbacks of pesticides and the unrealistic expectation that every vegetable look like those in still life paintings?

    The motives are understandable, but opportunities may be lost with the answer's simplicity. The answer of not growing edible plants strikes me as giving up if a problem arises.
