Board of Ed President wants taxes raised above Charter Limit

Letter from Board of Education President Christopher Barclay to members of the Montgomery County Delegation to Annapolis.

Question: Does President Barclay's letter represent Board of Education action? When did the Board of Education vote to request this legislation?  No Board action is cited in the letter.

It appears that this is just a letter from President Barclay. Where do the other Board of Education members stand on the legislation requests made in this letter?

  1. The BOE should be careful what it asks for. We seem to be closing in on the funding model used in most jurisdictions in the United States, where the School Board sets all or a portion of the local property tax rate.

Does the Board of Education really want taxing authority? Do they want every school board election to become a referendum on Property Taxes? Is that good or bad for schools?

And how would the board deal with the declines in real estate value? Today we have a more balanced funding scheme where revenues are a balance of income taxes, property taxes, and other taxes / fees.

  2. Let's have a show of hands by elected officials, both on the BOE and County Council, who have had LIENS against them for failure to pay their taxes!
