  1. Love how Social Justice Warrior Starr refers to the $247,000 bonanza to Westbrook ES as "various improvements."

  2. Sherwood High School funded the new auditorium sound system from "Independent Activity Funds". This means that the students paid for this capital improvement from cash that was collected into the Independent Activity Fund. This residual money is generated by class fees, school dances, field trips, and other money that students pay to the school. Is it really appropriate that students pay for capital improvements? Are students and their parents even aware that when they pay a class fee, the money is not really being used to fund the class, but is instead being used to fund capital improvements?

  3. Westbrook - what are the various improvements? Can you please reveal the secret? Is there a reason why it is listed like that?

  4. The independent activity fund at Sherwood high school, also includes proceeds from the Rock-n-Roll revival that would be the biggest beneficiary of a new sound system.

  5. So, a few questions. 1. re: payment by the Tower Co., a developer. Was that an amenity that was part of a development plan required by the county Planning Board? Since when do some public schools get separate funding from real estate developers? 2. re: edible gardens at Somerset ES and Ridgeview MS, I thought edible gardens were not permissible due to pest management issues. Are these ok now?

  6. @Anon 1:19 PM: When the drama or music department uses the sound system, will they be charged rent? Will the proceeds from the rent be added to the IAF?

  7. At Walter Johnson HS when the school was renovated, Principal Chris Garran carefully shepherded the construction money so there was some left over to install a computerized 'fly' system for when the children wanted to stage, e.g., 'Peter Pan.' MCPS (ie., all you taxpayers) paid for this perq, so on behalf of the WJ community, Thanks!

  9. The Superintendent lists “various improvements” for Westbrook Elementary in Bethesda because he does not want to draw attention to the fact that the school is building an outdoor classroom and updating its All Purpose Room with a new sound system, stage, floors, etc. This is such a blatant example of how hypocritical he really is. Social Justice Warrior? No way!
