Preparing for the first day

Ms. C, who teaches grades 3 to 5 at Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville, writes:
My students need protecto contact paper to write on their desks. They need nameplates they can also use as a math tool. They also need 3 chalkboard erasers, a chalk holder, a pencil sharpener, 3 pairs of bookends, and 4 magnet clips.

My Project

These materials will help my student in the fluency of the day. You can't write on a board with broken erasers. The bookshelf would become a mess without bookends. Lastly, what is a student expected to do if they can't do something as simple as sharpen their pencil. Many of these items are not directly tied to students learning, but they help the classroom run smoothly and enable students to focus on the larger tasks at hand.
A child should not be expected to use broken, disorganized materials in school.
That is why we need things like erasers and pencil sharpeners to maintain an environment suitable for learning. These items will help maintain a functioning classroom for students learning.

  1. Something is amiss here. These items can be ordered from MCPS. They have an online catalog for teachers to use. Why isn't this teacher using the MCPS supplies?

  2. Ordering and having the orders approved by the school and then sent to and received by the teacher are two different things around here. Sort of like when special needs families are told the county rules and guidelines for accommodation, start to follow the path to accommodation , and then are stonewalled. When will you all realize that you are all being disrespected as taxpayers in so many ways ?

    1. When will teachers realize they are being disrespected by their own union! If a teacher can't order a pencil sharpener, isn't that a clue?

  3. This is ridiculous. Why on earth can't a $2.4BILLION school system provide chalkboard erasers and pencil sharpeners for their classrooms. Just a reminder to everyone: 3 members of the school board that decided Montgomery County taxpayers cant' afford to put chalkboard erasers in classrooms will be up for re-election. Think twice next year when you pull the vote lever. Is this really the school system you want?

  4. A $68 electric pencil sharpener? How about the X-Acto School Pro Heavy-Duty Electric Sharpener on Amazon for less then $30, including shipping?
State sales tax of $9.25? There's no sales tax when a school makes a purchase.
Fulfillment labor and materials of $30.00? Something is amiss here!

It really shouldn't be necessary for a teacher to plead for these items, especially the common items such as a pencil sharpener and erasers. Teachers need to let their principals and their union know that they don't have these items.

    1. I have lived in many surrounding states and this is par for the course in many areas to be fair. This area seems to have taken it to a new level in terms of inside suppliers and padding the top of the food chain. I must say this new teacher with apparently no tenure protection is a profile in courage! Most would say nothing and worry that they would loose their jobs. It is true that there must be union problems as well. In no state I have lived in has a union member sat on School Board meetings to my knowledge. I think I read this is true here. This is a conflict of interest.. Union leaders are capable of abusing teacher union dues, which in many states can be up to 800 and up off the pay stub each year This teacher is a hero! She will be tough to mess with because she puts her mission above paycheck! Lucky to have her.
